How-To Work Out How Many Stitches You Need For Your Project.

Video Format http://youtu.be/xwZeGFd491I

You Will Need

Your Yarn's Label
Measuring Tape
Calculator

To start with you will need to measure the person or product you are making your knitted or crocheted item for. I will be using cm throughout.

Once you have the measurements recorded, find your yarn's label and locate the gauge chart on the back.

I'm going to use a hat as an example. For a 6-12 month old baby the circumference of the head is approx. 41-48cm.

If your using DK (light worsted weight) yarn your gauge chart will say 22sts and 30rows will make a 10 x 10cm (4in x 4in) square using 4mm needles. The highlighted numbers are what we're going to use.

48cm x 22sts = 1056 ÷ 10cm= 105.6 or rounded up 106sts

Remember that when making hats it can be made a little big for a child as they will grow into it. For garments you will need to have extra stitches for sewing up.
