Foundation Row With A, chain 5. Join in the round
Row 1 Work 12 double crochet in the ring, join with slip st in first double crochet (12)

RIGHT EAR FLAP

With right side facing, join A with slip st in marked st and work same as right earflap.

EDGING

Row 1 Join B with a single crochet in centre st at the back of the hat between the earflaps, ch 1, single crochet in each st around. Work 3 single crochet in end of each row of the earflaps. Join with a slip st in first single crochet. Fasten off.

FLOWER
With B, ch 5 join in the loop, ch 1.
Row 1 (RS) Work 12 half double crochet in the loop, join with slip st in first half double (12)
Row 2 (Slip st, ch 2, double, ch 2, slip st) in every st around (petal made), join with slip st in first slip st (12 petals)

EAR (MAKE 2)

OUTER EAR
Leaving a 15 cm (6”) tail, with A, ch 17.
Row 1 double crochet in the 4th ch from the hook (beginning ch count as first double crochet), double crochet in the next 12 ch, 6 double crochet in last ch, working in opposite side of foundation ch, skip first ch, double crochet in the next 13 ch, ch 2 (counts as last double crochet), slip st in last ch (34). Fasten off, leaving a 15 cm (6”) tail.

INNER EAR
With B, work same as outer ear.

JOINING THE INNER AND OUTER EAR TOGETHER

Leaving a 15 cm (6”) tail, hold wrong sides of outer and inner ears together, working through both thicknesses, join A with single crochet in the first double crochet, single crochet evenly around working last single crochet in the top of the last ch2. Fasten off, leaving a 15 cm (6”)

FINISHING

With B, sew flower in place where desired.

BRAIDS (MAKE 2)

Cut 6 strands of A and 3 strands of B, each measuring 71 cm (28”). Group into 3 hanks of 3 strands each by colour. Thread each hank though last row of earflap and fold over so strands are doubled. Braid doubled hanks until 10 cm (4”) of strands remain, tie an overhand knot tightly, and trim ends evenly.

EARS

Flatten hat and place stitch markers on each side edge at Round 3 for each ear. Place A tails of first ear at marked st. With a crochet hook, pull tails to wrong side through Rounds 3 and 4 and knot together to form a slightly cupped ear. With a crochet hook, pull B tails to wrong side 3 stitches behind where A tails are fastened and knot together. Repeat to fasten

Cast on 80 sts using the longtail cast on method on a 3.25mm needle.

Rows 1-7 K2, P2 around for roughly 2 cm

Change to 4mm needles

Continue in stockinette stitch until the body measures 8 cm

Cut the yarn, but leave a long tail to sew the side up. When sewing up turn your work inside out first.

Using a darning needle weave the yarn through the remaining sts on the needles, then sew down the side of the hat. Weave the yarn through the hat a few times and cut.

This beautiful, simply sweet toddler dress is perfect for any special occasion or even to wear as an everyday outfit. It should fit a child around the ages of 2 to 4.

Yarns used for this project were Marriner Double Knit with Wool 100g Rose Blush (Speckled Pink) and DEBBIE BLISS BABY CASHMERINO HAND KNITTING YARN - 50g White (100). These links are affiliated.

Materials

3 100g and 1 50g DK or Worsted weight Yarn (Referred as color A and B)

2.75 mm Needles

Tension

25sts and 31 rows to 10 cm st st worked on 3.25 mm needles

Abbreviations

SM5- (Smock 5) sl 5sts just worked on to cable needle, wind B from left to right around sts on cable needle twice, leave B on WS of work, sl sts from cable needle back on to RH needle.

Back

Using your 2.75 mm needles cast on 117sts using the double cast-on method.

Row 1 (RS) Knit to end

Row 2  Purl to end

Row 3 Knit to end

Row 4 Purl to end

Row 5 (Make eyelets) K1, yfwd, K2tog, Repeat to end

Row 6 Purl to end

Buttonhole Band

With RS of work facing, using smaller needles and yarn A, Knit up 23 sts along the right back opening.

Row 1 (RS) P1, *K1, P1. Repeat from* to end of row.
Row 2 (Buttonholes) K1, P1, (yrn, P2tog, rib 6) twice, yrn, P2tog, K1, P1, K1.

Work 2 more rows in rib. Cast off in rib.

Button Band

With the RS of work facing again and yarn A,  Knit up 23 sts on the left back opening.

Rows 1 and 3 (WS) P1, *K1, P1. Repeat from* to end of row.
Rows 2 and 4 K1, *P1, K1. Repeat from* to end of row.

Cast off in rib.

Join both shoulder seams

Collar (Make 2)

Using your 2.75mm needles and Yarn B Cast on 45 sts.

Row 1 (RS) K2, *P1, K1. Repeat from* to last st, K1
Row 2 P2, *K1, P1. Repeat from* to last st, P1

Repeat these 2 rows until work  measures 5cm. Cast off in rib.


Finishing touches

Sew on the collar, then the sleeves to the shoulders and finally the sides of the dress and the bottom seams of the sleeves. Sew on the buttons and weave in all your ends.

Basic Knitted Hat 3-6 months

To find out the amount of stitches you will need for a child or for yourself, you will simply take the circumference of the head and minus about 4 cm. You should try to keep the numbers even as this will help when you need to start decreasing. On the side of the yarn you are using there will usually be a tension chart, take note of this, mine has 22sts by 10 cm, you will use this to calculate the stitches required. You will now times the head measurement by the the stitches stated on the tension chart on your yarn, then divide by the centimeter. For example...

3-6 months

Circumference about 43cm I rounded it down to 40

(40*22)/10 = 88

So you will cast-on 88 sts.

The reason you round down the number is because the hat should stretch and fit snugly on your head. If you used the exact circumference of your head to make the hat, it will be loose and fall off.

You will need

Cast on 88sts using the longtail cast-on method, on to 4 dp needles (22sts on each needle)

Rib for 8 rows K2, P2

Rows 1 -2 Knit around (Grey)
Next 5 Rows Change colour (White) but do not cut off yarn A, just let it hang at the back of work. knit 5 rows in yarn B. It will look like you've just knitted 4 rows in yarn B but when you add yarn A back in to the hat, the fifth row will appear. Like so...

Next 5 rows Knit around in yarn A (Grey) and leave yarn B at the back of work. Do not cut off

Your work should measure about 7cm. If you want the hat to be longer then continue knitting around until you have your desired length before decrease.

Decreasing rows

Switch to yarn B (White)

Row 1 K9, K2tog all around (80)
Row 2 Knit all and every other row
Row 3 K8, K2tog all around (72)
Row 5 K7, K2tog all around Change color (Grey) Row 6 Knit all(64)
Row 7 K6, K2tog all around (56)
Row 9 K5, K2tog all around (48)
Row 11 Change colour (White) K4, K2tog all around (40)

Cut yarn and attach the end to a sewing needle. Weave the needle through the last 4 sts and pull tight. Push the needle through the top middle of the hat to hide the end. Weave in the rest of the stray yarn tails.
