Baby Lace Cardigan

This cardigan can fit a child aged about 1 -2 years

You will need

2 DK yarns (light worsted weight) (Refered as yarn A (50g) and yarn B (150g))
4 mm needles
3.25 mm needle
4 or 5 3.25mm dpns
10 markers/spare yarn
2 Stitch holders/spare yarn
5 Small Buttons


Cast on 120 sts on 3.25mm needle with Yarn A

Row 1 K2, P2. repeat to end of row
Row 2 Rib 5, pm, (rib 10, pm) twice, (Rib 14, pm) 5 times, (Rib 10, pm) twice.

Change to 4mm needles

Row 1 Knit all, kfb before and after every marker (140)
Change to Yarn B
Row 2 Purl all
Row 3 Knit all, kfb before and after every marker (160)
Row 4 Purl all
Row 5 Knit all, kfb before and after every marker (180)
Row 6 Purl all
Row 7 Knit all, kfb before and after every marker (200)
Row 8 Purl all
Row 9 Knit all, kfb before and after every marker (220)
Row 10 Purl all
Row 11 Knit all, kfb before and after every marker (240)
Row 12 Purl all
Row 13 Knit all

Remove all markers

Lace Pattern

Row 1 Purl all
Row 2 Knit all
Row 3 Purl all
Row 4 K3, *yfwd, sl 1, K1, psso, K6. Repeat from* ending last repeat K3 instead of K6
Row 5 Purl all
Row 6 K1, *K2tog, yfwd, K1, yfwd, sl 1, K1, psso, K3. Repeat from* ending last repeat K2 instead of K3
Row 7 Purl all
Row 8 K3, *yfwd, sl 1, K1, psso, K6. Repeat from* ending last repeat K3 instead of K6
Row 9 Purl all
Row 10 Knit all
Row 11 Purl all
Row 12 K7, *yfwd, sl 1, K1, psso, K6. Repeat from* to last stitch, K1
Row 13 Purl all
Row 14 K5, *K2tog, yfwd, K1, yfwd, sl 1, K1, psso, K3. Repeat from* to the last 3 stitches, K3
Row 15 Purl all
Row 16 K7, *yfwd, sl 1, K1, psso, K6. Repeat from* to last stitch, K1

Repeat rows 1-8 once more


Decreasing rows

Row 1 Purl all
Row 2 (K8, K2tog) 12 times (ssk, K8) 12 times (216)
Row 3 Purl all
Row 4  (K7, K2tog) 12 times (ssk, K7) 12 times (192)
Row 5 Purl all
Row 6  (K6, K2tog) 12 times (ssk, K6) 12 times (168)
Row 7 Purl all
Row 8 (K5, K2tog) 12 times (ssk, K5) 12 times (144)
Row 9 Purl all
Row 10 (K4, K2tog) 12 times (ssk, K4) 12 times (120)


Splitting your work in 3. The back and 2 front pieces of the cardigan

Purl 30 sts slip these sts off onto a long stitch holder or spare yarn,
Purl 60 sts and leave sts on the needle.
Slip the last 30 onto another stitch holder or spare yarn.

Back

Stockinette stitch till the cardigan measures 28cm/11inches (29 rows).  You'll start the shoulder shaping with the RS facing

Rows 1-3 Cast of 7sts, Knit all
Rows 2-4 Cast of 7sts, Purl all

You should have cast off 14 sts from each side

Cast off remaining stitches.

Front Right Side

Slip stitches back on the needle and attach yarn, with RS facing knit the first row, Continue in stockinette stitch until the front measures 24cm. End with RS facing

Neck and Shoulder Shaping

Row 1 Cast off 4 sts, Knit all (26)
Row 2 Purl all
Row 3 Cast off 2sts, Knit all (24)
Row 4 Purl all
Row 5 Cast off 2sts, Knit all (22)
Row 6 Purl all
Row 7 Cast off 2sts, Knit all (20)
Row 8 Cast off 7 Purl all (13)
Row 9 Cast off 2st, Knit all (11)
Row 10 Purl all
Row 11 Cast off 2 sts, Knit all (9)
Row 12 Cast off 7, P1 (2)
Row 13 Cast off 1st. Fasten off


Front Left Side

Slip stitches back on the needle and attach yarn, with RS facing knit the first row, Continue in stockinette stitch until the front measures 24cm. End with WS facing

Row 1 Cast off 4 sts, Purl all (26)
Row 2 Knit all
Row 3 Cast off 2sts, Purl all (24)
Row 4 Knit all
Row 5 Cast off 2sts, Purl all (22)
Row 6 Knit all
Row 7 Cast off 2sts, Purl all (20)
Row 8 Cast off 7 Knit all (13)
Row 9 Cast off 2st, Purl all (11)
Row 10 Knit all
Row 11 Cast off 2 sts, Purl all (9)
Row 12 Cast off 7, K1 (2)
Row 13 Cast off 1st. Fasten off

Button Hole Band(right side) 5 buttons

Pick up 34 sts with yarn B. You can use yarn A if you prefer

Row 1 (WS) P2, K2. repeat to end of row
Row 2 (Buttonholes) *K2, yrn, K2tog, K2, P2. Repeat from * 3 times, yrn, K2tog.

Rib for 2 more rows. Cast off in rib.

Button Band(left side)

Cast on 34 sts with yarn B or you can use yarn A if you prefer

Row 1 (WS) P2, K2. Repeat to end of row
Row 2 K2, P2. Repeat to end of row

Repeat these 2 rows 1 more time

Cast off loosely in rib

Sleeves

Cast on 40 sts with 3.25mm needles with Yarn A

Row 1 K2, P2. repeat to end of row
Row 2 *Rib 5, pm. Repeat from* to end (7 markers)

Change to 4mm needles

Row 1 Knit all, kfb before and after every marker (54)
Change to Yarn B
Row 2 Purl all

Repeat rows 1 and 2, 5 more times (124)

Row 13 Knit all
Row 14 Purl all
Row 15 Knit all, (K2tog before and after marker) 3 times, K2tog before 4th marker and ssk after marker, (ssk before and after marker) 3 times. (110)
Row 16 Purl all

Repeat Rows 15 and 16, 4 more times (54)

Cast off




Collar ( 2 optional collar choices)

Option 1
With yarn A, 3.25mm needles and the WS facing pick up 22 sts along the left t side, 32 sts along the back and 22 sts down the right side. (76) 

Row 1 Pfb, P21, Pfb, pm, Pfb, P28, Pfb, pm, Pfb, P21, Pfb, (82)

Switch to DPNS

Row 2 Knit all
Row 3 Pfb, P24, Pfb, P30, Pfb, P24, Pfb (86)
Row 4 Knit all
Row 5 P1, Pfb, P24, Pfb, P32, Pfb, P24, Pfb, P1 (90)
Row 6 K24 and Place on stitch holder, Cast off 42, K24

Right side of collar

Row 1 P2tog, P8, ssk Turn (10)
Row 2 Knit all
Row 3 P2tog, P6, ssk Turn (8)
Row 4 Knit all
Row 5 P2tog, P4, ssk Turn (6)
Row 6 Knit all
Row 7 P2tog, P2, ssk Turn (4)

Cast off the 4 remaining sts

Rejoin yarn to remaining 12 stitches on the right side

Row 1 P2tog, P9. Turn
Row 2 Knit all
Row 3 P2tog, P7. Turn
Row 4 Knit all
Row 5 P2tog, P5. Turn
Row 6 Knit all
Row 7 P2tog, P to end of row

Cast off all sts


Left side of collar

On DPNs split 24 sts on two needles. You'll work on the 12sts closest to the button band first. Reattach yarn

Row 1 P2tog, P8, ssk (10)
Row 2 Knit all
Row 3 P2tog, P6, ssk (8)
Row 4 Knit all
Row 5 P2tog, P4, ssk (6)
Row 6 Knit all
Row 7 P2tog, P2, ssk (4)

Cast off the remaining sts

With the RS facing rejoin yarn.

Row 1 K2tog, K9. Turn
Row 2 Purl all
Row 3 K2tog, K7. Turn
Row 4 Purl all
Row 5 K2tog, K5. Turn
Row 6 Purl all
Row 7 K2tog, K to end of row

Cast off all sts


Option 2

If you want just a normal ribbed collar then pick up the same amount of stitches along the neck but with the RS facing.

K2, P2 all the way around.

Keep doing this until your satisfied with the height of the rib then cast off.


Block all your pieces, sew up and weave in all the ends.

    I am making this cardigan for my little one.
    I have troubles with knitting the collar.
    - Before switch to Dpns: row 1 is 82.
    - After switch to Dpns: row 2 knit all and row 3 is 80.
    I do not understand this stage: I finished this row 3 but still having 6 remaining.
    I much appreciate for your great help.

    1. Hi,

      Thanks for pointing that out, I can't believe I missed that.

      I have looked through the pattern and corrected my mistake. Please let me know if it makes sense as I have changed the stitch names to make it slightly easier to understand, but all the increases are the same as before.

      As for the remaining 6 sts I think you'll have to undo row 3 unless you can make up for it on row 4.

      You can increase 6 stitches evenly on the knit side and space out your markers again so that you have 26 marker 34 marker 26. This way you don't have to undo anything.
