You'll need


  • 5.5mm needle
  • Aran (Medium weight) Yarn in two colours Referred as yarn A and B ( you can also use two stands of DK/Light worsted weight yarn)
  • Stitch Markers (about 2 or spare yarn)




Foundation Row With A, chain 5. Join in the round
Row 1 Work 12 double crochet in the ring, join with slip st in first double crochet (12)
Row 2 Ch 1, 2 double crochet in each st around, join with slip st in first double crochet (24)
Row 3 Ch 1, *1 double crochet in first st, 2 double crochet in the next st, repeat from *around, join with slip st in first double (36)
Row 4 Ch 1, *double crochet in first 2 sts, 2 double crochet in the next st, repeat from *around, join with slip st in first double (48)
Row 5 Ch 1, *double crochet in first 5 sts, 2 double crochet in the next st, repeat from *around, join with slip st in first double (56).
Rows 6–12 Ch 1, double in each st around, join with slip st in first double.

RIGHT EAR FLAP

Row 1 Ch 2 (counts as first double crochet here and throughout), skip next st, double crochet in the next 5 sts, skip next st, double crochet in the next st; leave remaining sts unworked, turn (7)
Row 2 Ch 2, skip next st, double crochet in the next 3 sts, skip next st, double crochet in last st, turn (5)
Row 3: Ch 2, skip next st, double crochet in the next st, skip next st, double crochet in last st (3) Fasten off.
With the right side of the earflap facing you count to the right from earflap and place

LEFT EAR FLAP
With right side facing, join A with slip st in marked st and work same as right earflap.

EDGING

Row 1 Join B with a single crochet in centre st at the back of the hat between the earflaps, ch 1, single crochet in each st around. Work 3 single crochet in end of each row of the earflaps. Join with a slip st in first single crochet. Fasten off.

FLOWER
With B, ch 5 join in the loop, ch 1.
Row 1 (RS) Work 12 half double crochet in the loop, join with slip st in first half double (12)
Row 2 (Slip st, ch 2, double, ch 2, slip st) in every st around (petal made), join with slip st in first slip st (12 petals)

EAR (MAKE 2)

OUTER EAR
Leaving a 15 cm (6”) tail, with A, ch 17.
Row 1 double crochet in the 4th ch from the hook (beginning ch count as first double crochet), double crochet in the next 12 ch, 6 double crochet in last ch, working in opposite side of foundation ch, skip first ch, double crochet in the next 13 ch, ch 2 (counts as last double crochet), slip st in last ch (34). Fasten off, leaving a 15 cm (6”) tail.

INNER EAR
With B, work same as outer ear.

JOINING THE INNER AND OUTER EAR TOGETHER

Leaving a 15 cm (6”) tail, hold wrong sides of outer and inner ears together, working through both thicknesses, join A with single crochet in the first double crochet, single crochet evenly around working last single crochet in the top of the last ch2. Fasten off, leaving a 15 cm (6”)

FINISHING

With B, sew flower in place where desired.

BRAIDS (MAKE 2)

Cut 6 strands of A and 3 strands of B, each measuring 71 cm (28”). Group into 3 hanks of 3 strands each by colour. Thread each hank though last row of earflap and fold over so strands are doubled. Braid doubled hanks until 10 cm (4”) of strands remain, tie an overhand knot tightly, and trim ends evenly.

EARS

Flatten hat and place stitch markers on each side edge at Round 3 for each ear. Place A tails of first ear at marked st. With a crochet hook, pull tails to wrong side through Rounds 3 and 4 and knot together to form a slightly cupped ear. With a crochet hook, pull B tails to wrong side 3 stitches behind where A tails are fastened and knot together. Repeat to fasten
